IHS Research Fellowship Program.

About the Institute of Health Systems:

The Institutes of Health Systems (IHS) is a civil society institution. The institute strives for excellence in health system research, training of health and related personnel for development of interdisciplinary skills to improve efficiency of health care delivery systems research, health policy analysis and application of information technology to improve health care delivery systems. IHS services, activities and projects broadly fall into research, training and consultancy assignments. The institute strives to maintain a balance between these three modes of learning and application to provide an environment for intellectual development, knowledge based work and at the same time keep the skill set of its faculty well grounded to realities of social services delivery in India and other developing countries.

The Fellowship:

There is no prescribed format for application. Applications are received through out the year. Candidates interested for a short term fellowship, should send a letter addressed to the Director, stating the purpose of the proposed attachment, proposed period of fellowship, name of the proposed host faculty if known, and source of funding for IHS facilities fee and the fellows stipend. A curriculum vitae should be provided giving details of educational qualifications, current assignments, job history, language, typewriting, personal computing and mobility skills. Note that minimum requirements for working in the Institute requires typewriting skills of 30 words per minute, personal computing skills including use of an office suite of applications like word processor, spreadsheet, presentation graphics, etc. The candidate will have to demonstrate type writing, and personal computing skills before joining and may be asked to demonstrate mobility skills.

The candidate should agree to comply with the Institutes working environment, complement and enrich it through his / her contributions. A note on the working environment in the Institute is provided to intending candidates during the course of the acceptance process. If you did not get it, please ask for it. Please note that definition and description of the working environment in the Institute is evolving. As and when new details are added, faculty, fellows and staff are informed about it.

  1. Doctoral students whose thesis work may align or coincide with an IHS project.
  2. Post graduates who aim at further studies and want to gain some experience.
  3. Post graduate students who want to do their residency or thesis or project work.

Office facilities for the fellow:

Fellows will be provided a workstation, EPABX extension, a Personal Computer, and shared printing services. Fellows can use all facilities available to IHS Faculty and Associates including; (a) Library services, (b) Internet browsing facility, (c) Photocopying facility etc. for purposes of the project work.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Based on the discussions at the time of acceptance of the fellowship, it is expected that the specified task is completed on time.
  • At least one scientific papers is published through, IHS working papers, report or monograph series. The same paper may also be submitted by the authors for publication in any indexed journal.
  • Funding:

    The candidate and the host faculty must locate appropriate funding to provide for the Institutional Fee, Travel to and from IHS, Stipend / Per diem / Settling allowance etc., Local conveyance, and Outstation conveyance. The exact amounts required for these purposes may vary depending on the circumstances of each candidate. Financial support for the various expenses may be secured from different sources. The Institute may be able to provide for some of the expenses, if suitable provision is available in the concerned project or programme activity or from any scholarship fund that may be being administered for the time being. The funding arrangements should be discussed and settled during the fellowship acceptance process.
