The AP Burden of Disease (APBD) estimates arrived at in this study are of importance from two different policy perspectives. National Burden of Disease (NBD) estimate will be of immediate interest to those concerned about health policy of the concerned national or sub-national entity for which the study is made. Using the case of Andhra Pradesh in India, the study examines available sources of data and describes their usability. Deficiency in availability of local data is highlighted to draw attention to the need for improving vital statistics, cause of death and epidemiological surveillance systems. How big is the private health sector? Do Private health care institution provide better quality care? Are they more efficient? Do they serve the poor? What's the role of the private health care provider elsewhere in the world? and many more. This book elucidates these issues, examines and analyses evidence from with in and outside India and seeks to answer at least some questions.

The book is based on a study of the private health sector taken up during August 1999 to March 2002. The study was designed to map the structure and dynamics of the private health sector and its implications for India’s health policy. Altogether 150 private (both for-profit and nonprofit) and 106 public HCIs were surveyed. Diagnostic facilities and alternate private practitioners located near by the sampled institutions were also surveyed. The survey collected information about each institution and their activities. In addition, client satisfaction and job satisfaction surveys were done by randomly selecting clients and employees. The study reviewed world experience with private for-profit health care providers, their relative performance vis-a-vis nonprofit and public providers.

Training Manual for Implementing National Health Accounts in India.

This manual was developed to train early researchers in National Health Accounts (NHA) methodology. The manual was commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India with support from World Health Organization (WHO), India office, in order to institutionalize NHA in the country. The manual is largely based on the WHO Guide to producing national health accounts (2003) and its adaptation by India. Definitions for various classes and sub-classes adopted in the aforesaid guide has been sourced from the OECD System of Health Accounts (SHA). The manual has greatly benefited from and liberally adapted material from the National Health Accounts Trainer Manual (2004) produced by the PHRplus and SHA Guidelines: Practical guidance for implementing A System of Health Accounts in the EU (2004) produced by the Office for National Statistics (UK). In addition, the manual has referenced a wide range of literature which has been acknowledged in respective chapters.

Health Workers Handbook in Telugu,
prepared for private health workers
in Bhadrachalam ITDA Area.

The then Khammam District Administration and Bhadrachalam ITDA officials wanted to improve access to health care facilities, by the people living in remote areas. They were concerned about poor services in primary health centres (PHCs) and the preponderance of 'RMPs' and quacks in the tribal area. The ITDA authorities recruited some of them as community health workers and wanted to suitably train them, so that they can help people access the health system, provide health education to people and help prevent epidemics. Training needs of the targeted private health workers was assessed systematically by a training needs assessment (TNA) team constitute by the IHS. This handbook was prepared by the TNA team for use in a four day training program for private health workers, conducted at Bhadrachalam. A copy of the handbook was distributed to all pariticipants for their reference.
